The first specific map of the Arctic was drawn by Gerardus Mercator in 1606. According to him, the North Pole consisted of a large, black mountain, Rupes Nigra et Altissima. Many thought this mountain was magnetic, which could be an explanation for why the compass points north. What they did not know is that when mountain becomes mountain, the magnetism freezes.
